If you are one of the millions of South Africans depending on the SRD R370 grant this month, here is everything you need to know about checking your payment status, understanding what your application result means, and what to do if things do not go your way. Sassa has confirmed that May 2026 payments are being processed between Saturday 24 May and Saturday 30 May, with the bulk of approved beneficiaries expected to receive their funds during the working week.

The quickest way to find out where you stand is through the official SRD R370 status check portal at srd.sassa.gov.za. Head to the site, click on the Status Check option, and enter your South African ID number along with the cellphone number you used when you registered. Your current application status will display immediately, and if your grant has been approved, your assigned payment date will appear alongside it. There is also a separate Reapplication section on the site that lets you know whether you need to submit a new declaration for the upcoming cycle.

Not everyone has reliable internet access, and Sassa has made provision for that. If you cannot get onto the website, you can dial *120*3210# from any mobile network to access your SRD status via USSD. Should that code not work for you, the older *134*7737# code remains active and will still return your results. Alternatively, the Sassa call centre on 0800 60 10 11 is available Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 16:00 — just make sure you have your ID number and registered cellphone number on hand before the call connects.

It is important to understand that payment dates are not issued as a single batch to all beneficiaries at once. Each approved applicant is assigned an individual payment date within the processing window. So if your status shows as approved but you have not yet seen money in your account or on your card, do not panic — allow the full window through to 30 May before contacting Sassa to raise a query.

SRD R370 Status Check: What Pending, Approved and Declined Actually Mean

Understanding the language on the status page can save you a lot of unnecessary stress. A Pending status means Sassa is still running verification checks against income, employment, and identity databases — it does not automatically mean you have been rejected. An Approved status confirms that your grant for this cycle has been authorised and a payment date will be allocated to you. A Declined status, however, means that at least one of those verification checks returned a result that disqualified you for this cycle, and the portal will specify the exact reason — common ones include Identity verification failed, Means income source identified, or Alternative income source identified.

If your application has been declined, do not assume that is the end of the road. Sassa allows every declined applicant 90 days from the date of the decline to request a reconsideration directly through the status page. If that reconsideration also comes back unsuccessful, you have the right to escalate the matter to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals. Crucially, both stages of this process are completely free — no lawyers, no fees, nothing. Visit srd.sassa.gov.za/appeal, enter your details, and submit supporting documents such as bank statements or a sworn affidavit to strengthen your case.

One question we hear often at SA Report is about the grant amount itself. The SRD grant was increased from R350 to R370 back in April 2024 and has remained at that figure for the current 2026 financial year. Many people still search for it using the old R350 terminology, but the official and current amount is R370 per month.

It is also worth noting that a decline in one cycle does not permanently bar you from the grant. You are required to reapply each and every cycle through srd.sassa.gov.za — even if you have an active reconsideration or appeal running from a previous month. Each application cycle stands on its own, and staying on top of your reapplications is the only way to keep yourself in the system.

For millions of South Africans, the SRD R370 grant is not a luxury — it is a lifeline. Whether you are checking your status for the first time or trying to understand why you were declined, the tools are available and the process, while sometimes frustrating, is navigable. SA Report will continue tracking Sassa payment updates throughout the May 2026 cycle, so check back with us for any developments that could affect your payment.
