The Motsepe Foundation Championship promotion race took a dramatic turn this week as results across Tuesday and Wednesday reshaped the standings significantly, with Kruger United emerging as the new pace-setters after a convincing midweek victory.

Kruger United made the boldest statement of the midweek fixtures, climbing to the top of the table with a 2-1 win over Lerumo Lions on Wednesday afternoon. Goals from Morne Nel and Ebrahim Seedat were enough to seal all three points for the home side, and with that result, Kruger now sit at the summit — even if only by a slim margin ahead of their rivals.

The result couldn’t have come at a better time, especially given what happened elsewhere in the division on the same afternoon.

Milford FC, who had been pushing hard for automatic promotion, dropped crucial points in a 1-1 stalemate against Casric Stars. The hosts had looked on course for a vital win after going ahead in the first half, but Casric’s Decide Chauke had other ideas, drawing his side level to deny Milford the maximum. That dropped point now sees Milford sitting second — two points adrift of Kruger United — and the pressure on them continues to mount with each passing round.

Casric Stars, meanwhile, sit in fifth place following the draw, still in contention but needing consistency to keep their season alive.

Upington City were the other Wednesday winners, putting on an impressive show to beat Venda FC 3-1 and climb to eighth place on the log. Hlumelo Mandla, Bongane Mambane and Siyabonga Mtombeni all got on the scoresheet, making it a comfortable afternoon for the Northern Cape side.

Motsepe Foundation Championship Results Throw Promotion Race Wide Open

Casting an eye back to Tuesday’s action, Cape Town City kept their promotion hopes firmly alive with a narrow but important 1-0 victory over Black Leopards at Athlone Stadium. Bosnian midfielder Dženan Zajmović popped up in the second half to net the only goal of the game, sending the Cape Town outfit into third place on the standings. It’s a result that keeps the Citizens very much in the conversation at the top end of the table.

Tuesday also produced one of the most one-sided results of the midweek programme. The Bees ran riot against Gomora United, winning 6-1 in a result that raises serious questions about Gomora’s form and their ability to stay competitive in this division going forward.

Hungry Lions, on the other hand, will be kicking themselves after failing to capitalise on a golden opportunity. A 2-2 draw against Leicesterford City meant they missed the chance to move to the top of the log — a result that ultimately allowed Kruger United to leapfrog them with their Wednesday win.

Highbury FC returned to form in Tuesday’s other fixture, defeating University of Pretoria 2-1 thanks to a brace from Naeem Amoojee. The striker was the standout performer on the day, and his double gave Highbury a timely confidence boost as the season enters its critical phase.

Down at the bottom of the table, Midlands Wanderers gave their survival bid a real shot in the arm by beating bottom-placed Baroka FC 2-1. The win keeps Wanderers in 14th position, but crucially they are now six points clear of the relegation zone, which is currently occupied by Black Leopards and Baroka FC. For Wanderers, it’s a result that could prove to be a season-defining moment.

With the promotion race now tighter than ever and the relegation battle heating up at the other end, the Motsepe Foundation Championship is delivering exactly the kind of drama South African football fans live for — and there is still plenty more to play for as the season moves towards its conclusion.
