IPL 2026 Schedule Out: MI- CSK to Clash Twice in Blockbuster Double-Ups

The BCCI has officially released the near-complete IPL 2026 league-phase schedule, setting the stage for another season of high-stakes rivalry matches and tightly planned matchups across India. With the tournament slated to begin on March 28, RCB will open the campaign as defending champions when they take on Sunrisers Hyderabad to kickstart the 19th edition.

For fans of history-making franchises, the early headlines belong to Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. The record five-time winners will meet twice in IPL 2026, giving supporters two separate opportunities to witness one of the league’s most followed clashes. The first showdown is scheduled for April 23 in Mumbai, while the return fixture is slated for May 2 in Chennai.

The league phase was initially released in partial form earlier, but on Thursday the BCCI published almost the entire calendar, leaving only playoff venues and dates to be confirmed later. As of now, the focus remains on league games, which will carry heavy weight in shaping the teams’ paths toward the playoffs.

IPL 2026: MI vs CSK and Full League-Phase Calendar Details

One of the most notable updates is the way teams have been arranged into two groups, based on the number of IPL titles they’ve won—similar to the structure used previously. Group A includes CSK (5 titles), Kolkata Knight Riders (3), Rajasthan Royals (1), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (1), and Punjab Kings. Group B features MI (5), Sunrisers Hyderabad (1), Gujarat Titans (1), Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants.

In earlier editions, teams inside the same group played each other twice, while cross-group matchups were handled once. This season, the BCCI has flipped that pattern. Under the new structure, teams in the same group will now face each other once, while matchups against teams in the opposite group will happen twice.

That change is what makes certain blockbuster fixtures stand out more sharply. For instance, the CSK vs MI clashes are now locked in at two separate venues and dates, ensuring both teams experience the rivalry on each other’s home turf. Similarly, MI vs RCB will also take place twice—first on April 12 in Mumbai and again on May 10 in Raipur.

The league phase begins with a packed opening window. Between March 28—when RCB hosts SRH—and April 12, there are 20 matches scheduled. The calendar also includes a double-header on April 12, marking a busy Sunday early in the season.

After that early burst, IPL 2026 continues with a fuller spread of games. A total of 50 matches are planned between April 13 and May 24, staged across 12 venues throughout India. One venue drawing special attention is Raipur, where RCB will play two matches. The franchise’s choice of Raipur as a second home base continues to show the IPL’s ongoing push toward wider geographical reach.

Another return to the schedule is Dharamsala. Last year’s meeting between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings at the HPCA ground was interrupted due to cross-border tensions involving India and Pakistan. This season, that fixture is back on the books. On May 11, the stadium will again host DC vs PBKS, bringing that rivalry contest into a full-length match day.

Double-headers are also playing a bigger role than before. The initial schedule already had four double-headers, and now eight more have been added in the updated format. Playoff match details are still pending, but ESPNcricinfo understands the final is set to be held on May 31, keeping the season’s climax in late May.

Afternoon Matches, Group Balance, and Key Time-Slot Trends

The schedule also clarifies the time-slot distribution, with 12 afternoon matches planned. Each team is guaranteed at least two afternoon games, but the distribution isn’t uniform. With one notable exception, most teams will enjoy at least one afternoon match at home.

Rajasthan Royals stand out as the only team scheduled to play two afternoon matches away, which could influence travel routines and matchday preparation. Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals are the only franchise listed to host two afternoon matches at home.

However, beyond who plays afternoon cricket, one detail looks particularly important for fan engagement and viewing patterns: three teams—PBKS, SRH, and DC—will each play three afternoon matches, while the remaining seven teams are set for one less afternoon slot apiece.

With league games spanning multiple venues and a schedule designed around the updated group-cross structure, the season’s competitive rhythm could be very different from what fans became used to in recent years. Still, with major rivalries already mapped out—especially the MI-CSK double-header and the MI-RCB two-match series—IPL 2026 is shaping up to deliver plenty of headline fixtures from the start.

As the playoff dates and venues remain the final piece to be confirmed, teams will now turn their attention to building momentum across the league phase. With matchups locked in across April and May, the BCCI’s release ensures one thing immediately for supporters: the race to the playoffs is going to be intense, and the most famous rivalries are already scheduled to light up the calendar.
