Durban — Tensions escalated outside Sherwood Hall grounds in Durban on Monday when a group of Malawian nationals confronted anti-illegal immigration activist Ngizwe Mchunu and members of March and March. Police were deployed to defuse the situation and prevent violence.
The group, some armed with sticks and chanting, told Mchunu he was not welcome. “This guy must go, we do not want to see his face here. He must go back,” one man told eNCA, while others echoed similar sentiments.
The Malawian nationals have been staying at Sherwood Hall since last week, with numbers growing from about 75 to an estimated 6,000. Seven buses arrived on Sunday as voluntary repatriation began, with about 1,100 Malawians already processed, according to authorities.
Ngizwe Mchunu’s presence was viewed by the group as inflammatory amid the ongoing repatriation process. The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that those processed were in the country illegally.
